NeurodivURGENT Hometown Heroes Awards Proudly Honors the Legacy of Longtime New Orleans Educator, Michael L. Sims

When planning NeurodivURGENT 2025, our goal was not only to bring together thought-leaders from around the country to collaborate and inspire, but to also honor the longtime sacrifices and dedication of amazing individuals right in our own backyard. That being said, during this year's conference, we are proud to recognize the life and legacy of the late Michael L. Sims, a longtime K-12 educator, administrator, athletic director, and textbook executive who faithfully supported schools/organizations not only throughout Louisiana but Georgia as well.

Michael completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Tulane University and earned further credentials in Educational Leadership and Supervision at University of West Georgia. Mr. Sims remained a dedicated servant leader until his transition in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When offering her thoughts about the upcoming honor, Michael's widow, Paulette Sims, chuckled lightly and said, "Wow... even in his absence, Mike's still making an impact. It feels good to be appreciated." She continued, "I imagine he's smiling down with joy to know that somebody is still thinking of the good he did for so many people."

The awards ceremony, named in Mr. Sims' honor, will take place on the evening of July 17, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans hotel as a part of The NeurodivURGENT Conference kickoff celebration. Our host for the evening's ceremony will be New Orleans native, Laketa M. Smith, community advocate, entrepreneur, and founder of A Bella LaFemme Society. This event will recognize several individuals from across Louisiana in various disciplines who have made a tremendous impact on the lives of neurodivergent youth and families. It will be followed by a mixer including delicious New Orleans cuisine, music, games, and activities for all to enjoy. Stay tuned for our full list of honorees to be announced on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

Individual tickets for Thursday's event are on sale for $40 and may be purchased via our website at neurodivURGENT.net. Interested in also attending the conference sessions, black-tie gala, or both? Grab your tickets today while they last! Note that all conference registrations include Thursday's Hometown Heroes event.
